Ru Yao Kiln celadon wares originate from Henan province. The technique was perfected in the Song Dynasty. The glaze used is unique and contains some small amounts of iron giving the fired glaze a luminescent look to it. Small veins exist after the firing process and with seasoning the veins will grow more prominent and will take on a golden brown color. Ru Yao wares should be cleaned with tea water or spring water and will develop a luster with repeated use.

History of Ru Yao Celadon Ware

Ru Yao (Ru ware) comes from the kilns around Ruzhou in today’s Henan and rose to fame in the Northern Song (11th–12th century). It was one of the “Five Great Kilns” prized at court. Classic pieces were small, simple forms made of fine stoneware and covered in a soft celadon glaze described in old texts as “the sky after rain.” Production was brief and imperial demand was high, which is why original Ru ware is now museum-level rare.

What makes Ru Yao special is the glaze. It’s a potassium–calcium celadon enriched with a little iron and fired in reduction at very high temperature. At peak heat the glaze becomes glass-smooth; as it cools, tiny bubbles and micro-crackle (开片) form, giving the surface its luminous depth and the famously soft, “baby-skin” feel. Modern Ru-style celadon is made in several studios (not just Henan) using the same principles: pale jade to moon-white color, fine crackle that slowly takes on tea color, and an understated form that lets the glaze do the talking.

Don't Pour well

"I absolutely love little teapots. This one looks so cute and for such a great price. However there's no filter holes inside hence every time I brew tea in this teapot it doesn't pour out of the spout. I have to open the lid and pour half out of the top lid."

Looks cute, but pours extremely slowly

"The teapot looks cute, but the pour takes ages, making it unsuitable for gongfu brewing in my mind. I wouldn't recommend it for actual usage, but rather for decorative purposes."

Cute and usable

"Very cute little pot. I bought all four mini celadon pots and this one is a slightly different colour and finish to the other three. The pour is dribbly, but for the price I'm satisfied. It's completely usable and completely adorable."

I got the whole set,

"I got the whole set, every shape, of these tiny teapots. They're the most novel, not to mention adorable, part of my teapot collection. I sometimes use them if I don't want to over drink tea. I would steap for only 15 seconds on average for most teas since these pots are so small."

Tiny but mighty!

"So bought this little bugger for a few reasons 1. I wanted to test this shape out 2. Rolled oolong 3. Wanted to try out a smaller session 4. It’s ridiculously tiny I read all the reviews and knew I was getting myself into a tiny teapot game. I’m very happy with this buddy. Definitely has some quirks but for 10 bones ya girl can’t complain! The pour is longer than I expected but not a big deal for me. Also the lid is not tight so it can make a bit of a mess, I can also get over that. I just pull back the leaves between each steep and it works fine. It’ll take a little time for us to find our balance but I’ll probably travel with this teapot and a small cup. It truly is tiny but might I might buy another one🙃"

Budget Magic

"Incredible pot considering it costs less than 2 lattes. I love brewing up balled oolongs in mine. Works great. Pour is good, but is a single-hole and will get clogged if using broken leaf."

Convenient for Gongfu

"I bought this small teapot to have personal gongfu tea sessions. So far I have only brewed some shou puerhs and Taiwanese oolongs in it. Sometimes the puerh will clog the spout, or fall out, and it will not pour straight. This pot is great for teas which open up and have a large surface area, as to not fall out of the spout, like rolled oolong teas. It's very useful to do personal sessions with this so you do not have to waste a lot of leaves on a larger pot, and you can pour it straight into a cup with a similar liquid capacity."
