Our Jianzhan wares crafted by lifetime Jianzhan pottery veteran Wu Hong Hua. Jianzhan wares are from Jianyang town in Fujian Province.  They became popular during the Song Dynasty and were prized throughout China, Korea and Japan.  By the Ming Dynasty Jianzhan wares fell out of favor, but luckily the tradition was continued in Japan for centuries and was eventually re-introduced in it's original birthplace (Jianyang Fujian) in the 1990's. Jianzhan glazes are all basically the same, but due to different firing temperatures and positioning within the kiln the fired glazes are totally unique from eachother and are typically separated into five distinct styles.

彩金 - rainbow, 兔毫 - rabbit fur, 油滴 - oil spot, 鳖甲盏 - tortoise shell, 雪鹧鸪盏 - partridge feathers

Gaiwan and cups are glazed and fired (at 1300C) in the Oil Spot 油滴 Style.  They are dense and heavy in the hand, hold and retain heat wonderfully, and generally elevate the tea brewing experience!

Here's a great video (in Chinese) that discusses the history and process of creating Jianzhan wares.

Gaiwan Volume 170ml (+/- 10ml)

Cup Volume 60ml (+/- 5ml)

PLEASE NOTE!:

  1. Due to the very high heat of firing, the knob on the lid of the gaiwan might not be entirely symmetrical!
  2. Each piece is unique, and as such there will be variations in the pattern and colors.  If you want every piece to look the same or look exactly like the pictures here please do not purchase these items!

Beautiful and well-made piece

"What a gorgeous piece of pottery. I paired it with the set of Ru celadon cups, and their delicate green shade matches well the more subtle green/brown shades in the glaze of the gaiwan. I'm also happy with the construction, which is sturdy with a lid that sits and seals heat in well. Thank you!"

Heat Retaining Gaiwan

"Finally! The gaiwan I have been waiting for. Perfectly thick and dense for brewing red and dark teas. Amazing heat retention and ideal pouring ability. What an amazing product! The weight is impressive and feels stable and secure in the hand. Note: underside of lid is unfinished and very unique saucer."

Beautiful, functional set.

"It's very nice, color and design are beautiful and it brews well. The only thing is it came chipped on the base, which isn't that big of a deal, but a bit disappointing."

"A wonderful and beautiful little set. I've used my Jianzhan stoneware Gaiwan as my daily drinker for the past few weeks. It is of excellent quality and I hope to use it long into the future."

Very Nice Glaze & Design

"This gaiwan and matching cups have a unique design and quality glaze finish. The seal between the lid and cup is not as tight as the Yixing Zisha clay gaiwan I purchased here, but that is a difference of material, and not workmanship. These are very well made with good uniformity and finish, while maintaining nice individuality between pieces. I like the way the gaiwan cup fits neatly into the saucer opening."

Very pretty teapot

"Very fragile and cracked my first one"

From too soft to nicely soft to nice kick : one of my everyday cups

"Really nice cups. It brings a softness to some black teas and paradoxically a little kick to some ripe pu erh teas. I use it along a ceramic cup and a yixing cup when trying new dark teas to figure out which one fit the best. Didn't try greens yet. Jianzhan has definitely a taste on its own. The shape and weight are also very nice, easy to drink from. Just make sure to be on a stable surface. I recommend it."
