This is a 2013 Spring harvested tea from Ku Zhu mountain area of Jinggu county (Simao). The tea received a heavy smoke aroma during the kill green process as wood was used to heat the wok and the space was not well ventilated. After several years of storage as loose leaf mao cha the tea has aged and the smokiness has faded to a pleasant level. If you like a smoky pu-erh tea, then this one might be for you!

The brewed tea soup is orange-red, the aroma is that of smoke, mushroom soup, and fruit. There is a sweetness to the tea that is not at all at odds with the smoky character and reminds one of a bit of meat or grilled zucchini. There is some astringency in the tea that can be moderated by avoiding long steeps in the first 5 or 6 steeps.

An interesting tea for those who want to experience something different or for those who like smoky pu-erhs!

Smoke

"This tea is not even that smokey ( in a good way ) And the aged puerh underneath the smoke is really really good. We usually get acrid smoke on top of bitterness, here we get rounded smoke on top of creamy fruitiness. Very different, than a purposfully smoked puerh with pinewood. I like going out with a thermos of this. ( it is quite energizing be carrefull )"

Smokey with a pleasent thickness.

"I am a huge fan of this tea. It's up front smokiness is divine and reminds me of camp fires and fireplaces. I've been a Lapsang Souchong fan for years, so this hits the spot."

Viva la smoky!

"So good. This was made just for me. I'm the one that loves it. A very present but enjoyable smokiness on what seems a really delightful bit of constituent tea material."

A pleasant Smoke

"I'll be the first to admit it, I have always loved the mushroom tuo shape. (This shape can also be known as a Jin Cha, meaning "Tight Tea") It is just fun to see something other than a normal cake/bing sometimes. Given "Smoky" is in the name, it really brings the smoke factor in strides. The aroma of the leaves smells like the end a fire that has been reduced to coals and ash. It has a sweet BBQ smell, a hint of molasses and unlit cigar tobacco. This one really lives up to its name. The smoke in the cup has more of a newly lit log kind of taste, where the dried wood is starting to ignite. The liquor has a dark amber orange hue to it and is a medium thickness. The sides of my mouth are instantly salivating. There's a umami meatiness to it that, combined with the aroma, tastes like I've been munching on some BBQ ribs. I experienced little to no astringency and it had a mild sweetness to really round out the experience. This tea sits at 18 cents a gram and to me, that's a steal."

Smoked glory!

"I love smoky teas, and I love sheng! This is not even the smokiest sheng I've had but it's one of the best. I love how it's buttery, astringent, smoky, and sweet!"

Not smoky to me. Bitter.

"My favorite tea is Lapsang Souchongs. The smokiest I can get. So this, to me is not one bit smoky. I pick up no smoke notes at all. This tea can get VERY bitter and astringent very fast. A max 20 second steep. Still has some bite and aftertaste. Any longer and its downright nasty. But to be fair, as taste is subjective... I do prefer a very dark Shu and I love a really black, dark Liu Bao. This one I guess, is just not my cup of tea ! Plus its a bit pricy for how small it is."

Smoke 'em If You Got 'em

"Good gravy this sucker is smoky! If you're curious what a good smoky tea is like, this is the tea for you. If normal smokiness in pu-erh is a hot dog, this is a hickory smoked ribeye at a swanky steakhouse. If you need a vegan equivalent, sorry, I can't help you there. I can, however, recommend this tea if your idea of a good time is doing shots of liquid smoke. It's also pretty sweet. Really reminds me of a good BBQ sauce. I steeped this tea for a long time, too. A minute+ to start, mainly because I was brewing while working and not paying attention, but even so, there was no bitterness to speak of, so don't be afraid to push it real good like Salt n Peppa. Get some!"
