This is a 2013 Spring harvested tea from Ku Zhu mountain area of Jinggu county (Simao).  The tea received a heavy smoke aroma during the kill green process as wood was used to heat the wok and the space was not well ventilated.   After several years of storage as loose leaf mao cha the tea has aged and the smokiness has faded to a pleasant level.  If you like a smoky pu-erh tea, then this one might be for you!

The brewed tea soup is orange-red, the aroma is that of smoke, mushroom soup, and fruit.  There is a sweetness to the tea that is not at all at odds with the smoky character and reminds one a bit of meat or grilled zuchini.   There is some astringency in the tea that can be moderated by avoiding long steeps in the first 5 or 6 steeps.

Any interesting tea for those who want to experience something different or for those who like smoky pu-erhs!

Nice tea. Strong smoky flavor

"Nice tea. Strong smoky flavor that does slightly obscure the rest of the tea, but does not totally mask the other flavors. Definitely prefer very short steeps for this tea."

Interesting and funny

"The smell reminded me of lìshān xiǎo zhǒng. It was funny how confusing that was knowing what this really is. The smokiness stands out, making other aromatics difficult to pick up (at least to me). However that is not a bad thing in this case because the taste is highly enjoyable, the mouth feel is the same as you would usually expect from a "soft" raw PuErh, and i got some really interesting cha qi out of this: first i felt energized, but that quickly changed to a relaxed state which lead to a very deep sleep afterwards."

Incredible

"These are just gorgeous. The smokiness is quite heavy, but not overpowering. I’d place the smokiness level between the hint you get from the 2017 gao ma er xi liang bai dan fu brick and the overdone (for me) 2018 cha yu lin liu bu xi village tian jian basket. I’m not a big sheng drinker as I find it difficult not to make them bitter by a few steeps in. I did have this problem to some extent with this tea, but much less than with some other shengs I’ve had. And man, it had LEGS. I stopped counting the steeps; all I know is I brewed it many times over the course of two days. Really great tea!"
