This lovely little 150 gram mini cake is called "Wu Zi Deng Ke" (五子登科), and is the one of the highest grade premium ripe teas released by Menghai tea factory for the year 2018! This special blend was first released in 2010 and has been a big hit with ripe pu-erh aficionados ever since! Menghai tea factory is the foremost tea factory in Yunnan with more than 50 years of history. Menghai Tea Factory (勐海茶叶厂): Menghai Tea Factory was formally established in 1940 by a group of over 90 tea professionals with origins from all over China. It is possibly the oldest specialized tea factory in Yunnan Province. Because of this, it has a solid reputation that is well respected by Pu-erh tea enthusiasts. It is located in Menghai county of Xishuangbanna (西双版纳) prefecture, which is renowned for being one of the birthplaces of Chinese tea culture. They were one of the first two tea factories (along with the Kunming Tea Factory) to come up with the 'wodui' (渥堆) method of ripening pu'er tea in 1973, and have a series of recipes that are undisputed as some of the finest ripened Pu-erh teas available. Formerly under the umbrella of the state-run CNNP, they went fully private in 1996 and adopted the 'dayi' (大益) logo. 'Dayi' means 'great benefit', which is meant to point out the great benefit that tea has on the body, the spirit, and human relationships.

A Mighty Mini..

"One word to describe this tea - lush! I'm going to say it again for good measure.. LUSH. Right out the gate it's thick and lubricating. Lovely dark fruit/date flavors with excellent depth. It didn't last QUITE as long as I would have liked, but aside from that it drinks like a tea twice the price. Can't wait to see how it evolves over the next few years. Grab a tin while the price is right and put it on your Winter is Coming shelf."

Exceptional

""To ruminate over the taste of tea and to sniff its fragrance is not proper tea connoisseurship." Lu Yu (733–804). Referred to by some as China’s Patron Saint of Tea, Lu Yu wrote, according to certain tea purists, the definitive edition on tea in 780 AD. This quote is itself from the new forthcoming translation of Lu Yu's book and I often think of this quote when people attempt to describe a tea as an experience of the palate alone. The point is the experience in one's entire body, unless, of course, you don't have one. After 25 years of cupping Pu-erhs, this is one of my favorite and i just bought another whole tin. Exquisite!

"What a delicious little cake this is. I tend to favor the Tae Tea Group teas at Menghai anyway since I went there and made my own cake, the leaves of which I picked myself, in 2000. As I brew all my ripe Pu-erhs for 4 full minutes with boiling Reverse Osmosis water, it brews up blacker than coffee and packs quite a wallop. I like deep, dark intensity; long lasting flavors, etc., but mostly I like to feel the tea's qi moving through my body and not only mobilizing stagnant qi but unblocking occluded meridians. Besides tasting wonderful, this tea does all of the above. YAY! Thanks, Scott."

A hidden gem

"I admit, I favor sheng over shou. This tea opened my eyes to the world of *good* shou, to the world of cha qi - not just dainty amounts that make you sigh and say “how quaint” but true cha qi that energizes one to move mountains in one’s mind. This tea was unlike no other, with no wet pile taste and yet strong camphor, mushrooms, wooden or bark, barnyard flavors and aromas with hints of small stone fruits dancing at the tip and back of the palate, begging me to ask myself where I remember the experience from. Was it black cherry? Ripe plum? Something not stone fruit but berry, perhaps, like black currant or boysenberry? Try as I might, I could not place the flavor, aroma or experience. Yet it was very real, growing with each steeping. This is definitely a tea that could easily sell for two or three times its meager price! Perhaps the fact that it is 150g and relatively small leaves has a lot to do with keeping the price down. This is fine for me - more I can purchase! But coming from a sheng snob who has been enjoying pu’erh for longer than I care to admit, I will make the bold claim that this is by *far* my favorite shou tea experienced to date. Thank you, Scott, for suggesting this tea to me!"
