About Jin Jun Mei:

Jin Jun Mei was created in 2005 and is a type of premium Zheng Shan Xiao Zhong black tea. It is made from the single buds of high mountain tea trees within the 565 square kilometers of the Wuyishan National Nature Reserve, centered around Tong Mu Village in Xingcun Town, Wuyishan City. The tea is produced using a unique process involving withering, rolling, fermentation, pan-firing, and drying, and is characterized by its "golden yellow color, sweetness in the liquor, and fragrance within the sweetness." The "Jun Mei" series of black teas is a typical example of innovation in tea-making techniques by the enterprise, with Jin Jun Mei and Yin Jun Mei both representing high-end, premium black teas. As soon as they were introduced to the market, they were enthusiastically received by tea enthusiasts, sparking a trend of Jin Jun Mei and Yin Jun Mei in the Zheng Shan Xiao Zhong tea market. Jin Jun Mei has high requirements for raw materials, and is entirely handmade.

Not bad

"Not bad. I'm not getting as much flavor as I have had in other teas. The flavor is good though. A great BOGO offer but I wouldn't buy it otherwise. Do shorter brews to avoid bitterness."

A worthwhile experience if fruit and fall spice is your thing.

"Of all the jin jun mei teas I’ve tried from YS, this is the first that truly delivers the fruit-and-spice profile I’ve been looking for. For years, I’ve been a repeat buyer of a “jin jun mei-style” tea from a local shop—one I fell in love with immediately. Unfortunately, it’s rarely available when I need to restock, so I’ve been searching for something comparable ever since. Not only have I finally found it here, I’d say this one edges it out. Brewing: 7g / 125ml, 90°C, no rinse, 10s + 5s The closest way I can describe the flavor is this: imagine a perfectly brewed cup of anji bai cha with a splash of mulled cider. The tea is remarkable—completely free of astringency, even when pushed with higher heat—remaining juicy and sweet across a wide range of parameters. That said, I’ve found a clear sweet spot for bringing out its warming spice notes. Below ~85°C or above ~95°C, those notes begin to fade, which is interesting given that in a similar tea I’ve had, those same notes disappeared once temperatures crept past 85°C. In terms of body and texture, I keep coming back to the anji bai cha comparison. It carries a soft, juicy mouthfeel reminiscent of a bud-heavy white tea, paired with a light, brisk drying sensation on the back of the tongue more akin to a green tea. It’s not at all unpleasant—if anything, it adds just enough structure to invite another sip. Across infusions, the profile shifts primarily in balance—moving from honeyed sweetness and warming spice toward something closer to marmalade. The first infusion stands out as the most aromatic and complex, and I’d strongly recommend drinking the wash to enjoy the tea fully. That said, the intensity drops off relatively quickly, and I tend to taper off around 5-6 infusions. The descriptor “delicate” feels particularly fitting here, though not in the usual sense associated with jin jun mei. Where many examples are delicate in that they’re unforgiving to brew, this tea is delicate in its expression. It is not robust in the slightest—light, nuanced, and best approached with a slower, more attentive style of drinking. While this is the best fruit-and-spice-leaning jin jun mei I’ve had, I’ve landed at four stars primarily due to value. It’s priced at roughly twice what I paid for a tea that comes quite close in quality. I also noticed a fair amount of broken leaf and fine dregs in my 250g bag—enough that I’ve felt the need to sift before brewing. That’s something I haven’t encountered with other YS teas, which have otherwise arrived in excellent condition. All that said, there’s still a strong chance I’ll come back to this one when my current supply runs out."

A Very Clever BOGO, Leaves The Want for More

"So much malt and chocolate in the aroma, the flavor is typical for Jin Jun Mei, although this is not the highest grade and does not seem to possess many hairs it doesn't seem to matter much in the cup. I would lump this into the higher-grade category of hairy eyebrow black tea although it is missing some of the classic markers of quality. If overbrewed which I do intentionally it does have a faint sourness, a tart quality different from astringency that may lead to some fruit or fruitlike comparisons."

A very special aroma when

"A very special aroma when you open a bag of tea. When you drink it, there is less flavor, no aftertaste."

"Very smooth and robust with cinnamon and spice notes. Very sweet. This tea evolves so beautifully prepared for the journey."

"It's almost rude how good that tea is."

Nice & sweet/smooth tea with no astringent notes.

"The tea also has a beautiful golden tea soup hue and also smells amazing. I brought this to work with me, so, for simplicity, I brewed this tea in a semi-western way with little leaf and lots of water but short brewing times. I need to try out the gongfu cha style too when I get a chance."

Oh no…

"Making this a BOGO deal was so clever of you all, because once people taste a little sample of this, it will be INCREDIBLY difficult to not order more. I was initially quite skeptical, since many a Jin Jun Mei I have tasted have failed to meet expectations of the price point, but my first thought after putting this to my lips was “oh no…I’m going to have to buy more of this…” The fragrance of this stuff in the gaiwan is magical. The taste is a compelling and complex mixture of malt and chocolate in the earlier steeps that gives way to an incredible sweetness that will have you swearing there is sugar dusted over every bud. The advice to drink some of the wash is well founded, because it feels (almost) too good to give to the tea pets. Buy some, or tack it onto one of your orders above the BOGO threshold; you will not be disappointed!"

Q&A

I just had some of this tea for the first time and have to ask, is this tea flavored in any way? I have a Ruan Zhi oolong from another supplier, that I suspect is flavored, and this JJM smells and tastes identical to it. Thanks.
It's not flavored.
