Wild grown Jiaogulan (绞股蓝) from Liang He of Dehong! Grown in the mountains of southwestern China for thousands of years, Jiaogulan is a wild herb that has been consumed as a tea or in soups. Jiaogulan is believed to have many properties similar to Ginseng, and is purported to have almost 3 times as many saponins (gypenosides) as Panax Ginseng.

You can brew Jiaogulan much as you would a green tea, pu-erh or oolong. Measure 5 grams per 100ml brewing device (gaiwan or cha hai). Use 85-90c spring water and wash once briefly to activate the Jiaogulan. Drink successive infusions. Brewing time can increase after a few steepings (start with 25 seconds).

Our Liang He Jiaogulan is different from our Yunnan Wild Grown Jiaogulan * Gynostemma pentaphyllum because it's purely leaf without the stems, making it a bit more bitter than the Yunnan Wild Grown. We recommend short steeping times and/or using less Jiaogulan. This is very strong and potent jiaogulan!

Contains no caffeine whatsoever!

A Tea Alternative that Seems to Work for Me

"- Function: Great way to end the day, especially because it is not caffinated. - Taste: Slightly sweet with a return astringency - Website: I appreciated the description that the website gives regarding this tisane, specifically how they give the latin as well as the sort of romanized mandarian chinese name of it so I can look it up on TCM websites and learn a bit more about the herb"

Great addition to your tea!

"I add a teaspoon to my daily Pu-erh. I prefer this type of Jiaogulan to "Yunnan Wild Grown Jiaogulan * Gynostemma pentaphyllum" because it seems to be more concentrated. I do not perceive any particular bitterness. According to Winston and Maimes, “Adaptogens - Herbs for Strength, Stamina, and Stress Relief” (2019, 2nd ed.) Jiaogulan is a “possible adaptogen”. Adaptogens help the human body adapt to stress, support normal metabolic processes, and restore balance. They increase the body’s resistance to physical, biological, emotional, and environmental stressors and promote normal physiologic function. For more basic information about Jiaogulan see Winston and Maimes (2019, p. 216-219)."

Ive had jiaogulan through a

"Ive had jiaogulan through a couple diffeent sources in the past, but this is by far the best quality and the most potent that i have had. I will definitely continue to purchase it and i would reccomend it to anyone who loves jiaogulan or is looking to try it. Make sure to steep in small ammounts though as it is very potent. I use 5 grams in my 140 ml gaiwan."

Love it!

"I don’t know what I was expecting, but I was definitely surprised by the taste. It is bitter , but after a few sips, it definitely is something you relax into, it fully coats your mouth and has a very warming energy! For its function, I use it for my overall energy and I can definitely feel the effects. If I could describe how it feels in the body, it would be like a warm glow from a fire. Shipping was great!"
