This is a 2006 Yao Xiang Aroma Liu Bao Tea that was aged in Wuzhou (Guangxi). The Yao Xiang aroma is not something that the tea started with, but rather comes about during the aging/storage process after several years.

Yao Xiang Aroma is a type of betel nut aroma Liu Bao that happens with longer term aging and under certain storage conditions. See section 8 below for an explanation of the distinct character of "yao xiang".

Recognizing Betel Nut Aroma by Key Characteristics

Based on multiple experiments and discussions from betel nut aroma-themed tea tasting sessions, my fellow experienced tea friends and I have gained several insights into Liu Bao Tea’s betel nut aroma. Here are ten general conclusions:

  1. Mature Betel Nut Aroma: This is the pleasant and enjoyable type of betel nut aroma most often referred to. It can range from light and elegant to rich, subtle, and deeply hidden. Although the styles differ, the aroma remains consistent in its core characteristics. The tea broth is sweet and mellow, harmonizing with the betel nut aroma to create a very pleasant and comfortable drinking experience. It resembles wood but isn’t exactly woodsy, and it’s akin to smoke but not smoky. The aroma fills the mouth, and the flavors and scents are rich in layers. A slight tangy feeling under the jaw may enhance the sensation of salivation, bringing a smooth and enjoyable experience.

  2. Fresh Betel Nut Aroma: Tea that has the potential to develop a betel nut aroma often exhibits a fresh and “clear” aroma in its early stages, typically within the first few years. Although it is not yet fully enjoyable, as its flavor and scent haven’t matured, this early aroma can indicate the tea’s potential to develop the betel nut aroma later on.

  3. Transformation from Fresh to Mature: A Liu Bao Tea with fresh betel nut aroma will, through proper storage, transform into a mature aroma. The specific type of mature aroma that develops depends on the storage conditions and environment, as well as the quality of the raw materials and production techniques.

  4. Subtle Dry Scent: Tea that has betel nut aroma tends to have a subtle dry and aged scent that is not easy to detect in its dry leaf form. This scent can help identify whether the tea has betel nut aroma, but it requires careful attention.

  5. Emerging Aroma During Washing: Sometimes, the betel nut aroma can be detected during the tea washing process. However, it’s essential to differentiate between the betel nut aroma and similar scents, such as Yao aroma or smoky aroma, as they can be easily confused.

  6. Complex Aromas: A Liu Bao Tea may exhibit multiple types of aromas, such as betel nut, Yao, or wood. Experienced tasters can distinguish the betel nut aroma from others. However, less experienced tea drinkers may mistake betel nut aroma for smoky aroma due to their similarities.

  7. Smoke vs. Betel Nut Aroma: Smoke and betel nut aroma are not the same. The former is often the result of improper processing and can cause throat irritation, while the latter is soft, smooth, and pleasant, becoming more refined with repeated brewing.

  8. Distinguishing Yao Aroma: Some tea with a scent similar to betel nut aroma is actually Yao aroma. Yao aroma is more intense and bold, but the true betel nut aroma is pure, harmonious, and elegant, with a lasting sweetness and a gentle finish.

  9. Persistence of Betel Nut Aroma: High-quality Liu Bao Tea with betel nut aroma maintains its fragrance through many brews, with the aroma becoming purer and softer as the tea is steeped repeatedly.

  10. Faster Transformation with Certain Leaves: Liu Bao Tea that contains a certain amount of stems or medium-sized leaves tends to develop betel nut aroma more quickly and richly. This adds complexity and depth to the aroma, which can be detected both through taste and scent.

In summary, betel nut aroma is a distinctive characteristic of Liu Bao Tea, and its development depends on aging, region, and craftsmanship. The enjoyment of discovering and savoring this unique aroma adds to the rich experience of Liu Bao Tea appreciation.
