A lovely old arbor (古树) black tea cake made from first flush of spring 2020 tea harvested from 80-300 year old tea trees in Man Gang village (Bang Dong, Lincang).

We have been working closely with a family in Man Gang for several years now and have asked them to help us pick and process a black tea (and a white tea) from their old arbor family tea garden!  The result is a lightly processed and sun-dried black tea that is delicious to drink, sweet and thick, aromatic, and bubbling with cha qi!

This lovely tea was pressed into a 250 gram tea cake with a medium+ level of compression to lock in the aroma and flavors of tea, allowing for a gradual aging over time.  You can store like you would a pu-erh cake (and can be stored alongside raw pu-erh or white tea cakes), or if you prefer it to stay the way it is you can seal it up.  Ideally a clay jar or wooden box with some/minimal air flow would be best!

Net Weight:  250 grams per cake (7 cakes per bamboo leaf tong)
Harvest time:  Late-march to Early April 2020
Harvest Area:  Man Gang village, Bang Dong county, Lincang Prefecture
Total Production amount:  100 kilograms

Excellent and Interesting Tea!

"I completely agree that this tea is like a mixture of Laoshan black and Bu Lang raw. The dry smells richly of Fig Newtons and pipe tobacco. The wet leaf aroma is raspberry jam and brown grain. The dominant flavors are dark fruit and spice with a little bit of chocolate and malt. While you can definitely pick out the black tea flavors in the earlier infusions, I think the tea tastes more like an aged Sheng in the later infusions. This tea is an easy drinker and would be an excellent introduction to raw tea for black tea drinkers. I can see experienced drinkers scratching their heads trying to compartmentalize this tea, but overall I think this tea is fantastic in its own right."

Black and Raw

"Would just like to second the BCM’s review here. This is a super curious blend between black and raw teas, it’s very enjoyable to scan through it’s pallette feeling one or the other at will. Also a good gateway to raw teas for someone who likes blacks."

Light, sweet, fruity, refreshing … really enjoyed it

"Got a sample of this tea and am considering getting a whole cake. It has a very light fruity and sweet taste. Tried many YS black teas over the years and this is definitely in the upper half. For me it is too expensive to be my go to „throw in a large mug and drink during breakfast“ tea, but the value you get is still very good. I cant imagine that anybody who gets that tea would not enjoy it. If you are looking for a light and sweet, refreshing tea look no further."

Good example for cheap, but very enjoyable black tea

"This tea definitely overdelivers. Big pretty leaves with a malty taste and middle dark color to start your morning or as a "pick me up tea" before your afterwork."

Fruity and spicy

"This was my first time trying a compressed sun dried black tea. The aroma of the dry leaves is like ripe (and perhaps dried) stone fruits. The tea (brewed gongfu style) has a thick mouthfeel compared to most black teas, and has a fruity and slightly spicy flavour. In a way, this almost feels like a halfway between a raw puer (the mouthfeel and some of the fruity flavours), and a more conventional Yunnan black tea (the smoothness, slight maltiness and lack of pronounced bitterness). I reckon someone who likes either would like this. It will be interesting to see how this develops over time."
