Big Snow Mountain area of Mengku in Lincang is a high alttude area that's home to many tea gardens.  This lovely black tea was processed with care from first flush of spring assamica tea leaves picked from 30 to 40 year old plantation bushes growing naturally at an altitude of 1800 meters.

The tea brews up a deep red tea soup, with a lovely floral front-end, and smooth thick sweet after-taste.  Thick and viscous tea, complex and interesting, while lasting many infusions makes this a worthwhile newcomer to our offering here at Yunnan Sourcing!

These Dragon Balls were made by my mother- in-law and father-in-law. They make them in their spare time.  They use little pieces of cotton to compress them instead of saran wrap.  Saran wrap compression is the most common method because it's faster, but it causes off gassing into the tea since the tea must be steamed to soften and is very hot. We use cotton, which is safe.

Dragon balls are great because they are perfect single brewing servings, and because the leaves fare much better during transport and storage compared to loose leaf form, which tend to break apart causing the brewed tea to be overly astringent and/or bitter and detracts from overall look of the brewed leaves!

50% of the profits from the sales of these Dragon Balls will go directly to my father/mother-in-law.   We will give them the money as a red packet during Chinese New Year, since they won't accept money directly from my wife or I.  Most likely they will put most of it in the bank for their retirement!

Each Dragon Ball is roughly 8 grams of tea (+/- 0.5 grams)

Big snow mountain dragon balls

"The dragon balls were fantastic. Several brewings of very out standing tea. Great flavor. Will order them again"

"Delivered quickly, packs a great and nuanced flavour."

Novice opinion

"Nice, tight balls of leaves, neatly packaged. I've loved this kind of tea from other vendors, and this one is just as good, if not better. Like other Dragon Ball teas of this type, it's important not to over steep. The taste will get very astringent and bitter. I stick to no more than 2.5-3 minutes. Lowering the temp to 200°f helps, too."

Tea balls

"I can see why the Gong Fu method of brewing is recommended. I tried these in a travel mug, but did not care for the results."

A very lovely tea, love the cotton wrapper! Flavor is nice and well rounded....and lasts a few brewings as well!

"An instant favorite for me. I love dragon balls, and these are top notch. The tea takes two brewings to fully open. the leaves are large and beautiful. Re-ordering right now!"

Full bodied black tea!

"I love the Big Snow Mountain Black tea and it's great to have in the conveniently sized and portable dragon ball shape! Looking forward to trying the 2018 version! Thanks!"

There are nicer red tea balls than this on YS

"I had high hopes for this tea, I really love many of the other dragon balls offered here (especially with chrysanthemum) but frankly this didn't give me the same experience as the other ones. I brewed this gong fu style and at first the floral notes and sweetness were present, but after the 3rd brew the flavour significantly dropped off. It tasted almost grassy (not like green tea though) and devoid of depth, the only redeeming feature is the pleasant aftertaste). Maybe I just got an off ball? Won't be buying this particular one again."

"A very nice black tea the tiny shape of a marble"

This is my new morning

"This is my new morning tea. I place one entire Dragon Ball in a clear glass, French jam jar and watch it unravel producing a beautiful, deep, reddish brown hue. I brew it for 3 full minutes and though it has all my favorite Yunnan Red flavors, it's different. It's deeper and darker like a farm tea. It doesn't have all the refined qualities of a Maojiang or a Simao but it satisfies something deeper. It feels more nourishing somehow like it was just made this morning for the farm hands. I love it."

Arguably the best red tea

"Arguably the best red tea of the season in the Yunnansourcing portfolio! Flowery, fruity, soft, complex with long-lasting aftertaste. Much better than its loose leaf brother - which is excellent and was the best red tea of 2016 here."

Q&A

can you change the title to indicate the family connection. i just got done placing a big order and clicked this accidentally - i would have certainly ordered some if i knew the story. Perhaps call them YS Family Jewels...
Yeah... well not going to change the title. All our Dragon Balls are made by my mother-in-law. It says so in the descriptions for all the Dragon Balls. Thanks!
