Hou Zhong (猴种) is a unique Phoenix Dan Cong varietal, that has a strong and thick taste with some notes of pear and bittermelon. Aroma is floral and sweet, the the tea soup is a deep viscous golden color. Leaves are light to moderately oxidated, and hold up well to multiple brewings.

This particular tea grows in Tian Zhu Keng village at an altitude of about 800 meters， and is grown by the same family who grows our “Rose Aroma" Dan Cong. The year round cool temperatures combined with fog and mist gives this middle mountain Dan Cong a strong character. Tea trees are mix of younger (25 years) and older (up to 80 years) growing naturally.

This is an interesting varietal with unique character but without a high price tag.

"This tea is very good, it has a smooth and delicate sweet fruity taste. A vegetal bitterness accompanies it in every brew, but it plays nice with the other flavors. As this has rested a few years, the roast is really mellow. The tea is also extremely fragrant and has a lingering heavenly melon aroma."

Extremely unique and specific flavour profile

"Not sure if a coincidence or related to to the monkey reference in the name but it has an incredibly upfront aroma and taste of banana bread. Medium to thick mouthfeel and deep, rounded taste. Some astringency particularly in the earlier steepings, a little too much for me to drink it very regularly. Complex flavour profile with nuttiness, a bit of roast and various floral notes but the primary note and reason I come back to this when I'm in the mood is to have liquid form banana bread."
