Mutton Fat Jade Porcelain is a unique porcelain style from Dehua (Fujian) that is aesthetically pleasing but also has excellent heat retention and is completely non-porous.  The look of Mutton Fat Jade Porcelain 羊脂玉 is startling and pleasing with a matte look.  It's not a glazing technique, the entire piece is the same material inside and out.  The matte finish is also hydrophobic so water quickly moves off the outside.

Mutton Fat Jade Porcelain is excellent for teas that benefit from excellent heat retention when brewing.  We have found it brews these teas the best:

  • Oolong Tea (Tie Guan Yin, Taiwan Oolongs, Dan Cong, Wu Yi Rock Oolongs)
  • Pu-erh Tea (Ripe and Raw)
  • Black Tea (if brewing Jin Jun Mei or other smaller leaf black teas use 85-90C water)
  • White Tea (all types)
  • Hei Cha (all types)

Set contains:  (1) Easy Gaiwan, (1) Infuser Insert, and (2) Cups

Set comes in a zipper pouch

Easy Gaiwan volume is 175ml, Cups are 50ml each

Made with a combination of hand and molding technique.

Perfect size, function, and beauty design

"I got this gaiwan 6 months ago and I've enjoyed every pour out of it, truly. When I was eyeing it at first I was skeptical about the 'heat factor' too, handling it with its handle-design instead of the more common lip-design most gaiwans have. Despite what some reviewers have experienced, I have had no problem handling it, even when I'm using a hotter temperature say for more robustly aged or roasted teas (shu pu-erhs or more highly oxidized Wu Yi's or hong chas for example). The handles get nice and warm yes, but not too hot to handle for a focused pour, same with the lip of the basket. And even less so for a more dialed in temperature, say for a greener oolong, white tea, higher grade hong cha, etc. And I love it the most because I can take it to the office with me. The case is very secure and easy to pack. All this to say nothing about the design - very easy on the eye, carved cloud/tea steam design is really nice set against the backdrop of the 'milky' translucent light filtering vibe of mutton fat jade. Exquisite!"

Better than expected.

"This was my first order of tea ware and it exceeded my expectation. It is very smooth and finely finished."

Glowing piece!

"I love the texture and look of the infuser and cups, especially with Purple Voodoo black and Wild Da Hong Pao (two of my favored teas from YS) in it! Very nice function and fits nicely in case. This is my new at work tea set and it works nicely."

Works, but far from perfect

"While this is definitely useful for if you're traveling and cant bring even a small gaiwan, I'd avoid in almost any other situation. First off it gets very hot even on the little handles, and the infuser basket gets hot enough to burn you if you aren't careful (and you need to touch that to stop the infusion), also it can be tricky to get the right amount of water, as if you aren't careful what seems like a normal amount looking from above is enough to overflow out of the spout. The craftsmanship is uneven in some points, but that's fairly minor as it doesn't affect the actual tea making process and is natural with handmade products. Overall while it did successfully brew some tea, it was far from an enjoyable process and I don't see much reason for this to be used except in very specific circumstances."

Q&A

Hello! Is the included zipper case hard or soft? Would this be a good “travel” set for brewing on the go? I often take tea with me wherever I go to brew for folks! Thank you!
The zipper case is about 70% rigid, but not as rigid as a guitar case. You wouldn't want the set in the case banging around in your bag or suitcase though.
