During the 2nd half of the 20th century most tea plants planted for black tea cultivation in Yunnan were hybrids of Assamica but not pure Assamica (大叶种).  Pure Assamica is what's used for Pu-erh production and what was used to produce this lovely tea.

Picked in early March in and then expertly processed by a small Ning'er area village cooperative this burly black tea features thick stems, with leaves and buds covered with downy hairs.  The withering process has given the buds a deep copper-gold color and the leaves a brown black color.  The flavor is very sweet, but there is a slight mineral astringency to counter it.  The depth and thick viscous texture of the tea and the heavy sugarcane aroma makes for a delightful experience.

The incredibly affordable pricing we offer makes this tea a solid choice for daily drinking but also offers insight into "Pure Assamica" as a varietal of choice for black tea production.

Free sample in my order

"Got a free sample of this amazing black tea in an order I placed, it's very different from other black teas you'll usually have. The things that make it different and I like most about it is the really sweet yet fresh aroma/taste. Definitely recommend it if you wanna try something different in the black tea category!"

Incredible

"Got some as a sample. Couldn't believe what I was drinking; I don't even like assamica. It has a kind of molasses-like brightness to it that I've never gotten from any other red/black."

Great black tea

"YS threw a small sample bag of this into one of my orders and I really enjoyed it, very good chance I'll buy some next order."

Solid

"Solid is the right word for this tea. If someone were to ask what black tea tastes like, I'd give them this rather than give them something to impress them or hit them with some kind of wow factor. This is very in-the-middle in a good way that is very enjoyable. It isn't super sweet to me personally but has a more mellow lemony flavor. Overly malty teas like the Black Gold Bi Luo Chun taste off to me and this doesn't have any of that. It's a great tea that would have to go on my short list!"

A Bold and Robust Yunnan Black Tea

"This is a good black tea. Strong, with a dark bark-brown liquor. It withstands six infusions with 90 °C water, switching to 100 °C for the final steeps. Its subtle aroma carries a hint of chocolate, while the flavor combines a touch of chocolate with the characteristic base taste of traditional Yunnan red teas, complemented by a slight coffee-like bitterness. It is certainly a very good tea, just not entirely to my taste — so it gets one star less."

I love Golden Needle. It

"I love Golden Needle. It has the most unique flavor for a black tea. It offers notes of nuttiness like a white tea but the richness of a black tea. The color is beautiful."

Malt bomb!

"Robust yet smooth malty black tea with subtle complexity of hints of cocoa, coffee, a little fruity tartness and stony mineral character. The strong Assamica character is noticeable from the first sip. Brewing gong fu, the leaves and buds generously give flavor over a ridonkulous number of steeps, gradually fading without dropping off. The tea holds up well to very hot water. The only thing missing is substantial body. To me it’s a bit thin and watery; like how fresh raw puerh can be. Perhaps aging (2024 harvest) in a sealed bag for a few years might help. Beautiful looking tea leaves and buds with bright red tea soup. Overall, it’s a good daily morning black tea at a nice price."
