Mang Zhi is a small village of Yi and Yao people living just west and south of Yi Wu town in the vicinity of Yi Bang and Xi Kong villages. Like the teas from Yi Bang and Xi Kong the tea is a primordial mixed large and small leaf varietal. The tea leaves are not as big as Yi Wu mountain (proper) large leaf varietal but have a higher level of aroma (香气高) but not lacking in cha qi (茶气). The brewed tea is aromatic, thick and sweet but not entirely lacking in bitterness and astringency. Mang Zhi village tea leaves are dark olive green color when brewed.

Careful attention was paid to the processing of this mao cha giving it an even taste and color with little or no black flecks (if the leaves are signed during the kill-green process). The mao cha was carefully steamed and pressed with 40 kilogram stone presses in the traditional manner and each stack of 7 cakes was packed in the highest grade bamboo leaf tongs for collection and long-term storage.

In total just 15 kilograms of this tea has been produced. We have delayed sales of this cake for several weeks to allow the water vapor from pressing to dissipate. Further aging will only improve this wonderful tea!

Very relaxing tea

"I’ve had this tea since 2018 and it’s taken a bit of experience to get the best sessions with it. I don’t think it’s suitable as a beginner tea as I was a beginner when I bought it and now, with time and more experience have a realised more about this tea to my advantage in drinking it. The compression is pretty tight so I like to preheat the gaiwan generously and do a deep rinse with just enough water to cover the chunk to begin. Watch the tea and at the first signs of relaxation and changing colour of the liquid, pour off the rinse. Then allow it to sit a minute or so. This gets it going nicely. The flavour of this tea is very elusive. Sweet herbal, and woody notes are balanced with refined bitterness and astringency. In the early steeps the bitterness directly gives way to a sweetness which sticks on the breath. If you are searching for hard hitting flavours you have to push the tea after steep 4 or so. This tea is very calming. It is very easy to sit for a long period of time with almost nothing in your mind after consuming it, I don’t find it sedative either which is very nice. If you drink a lot of blends than a sample of this tea may be disappointing for you, but if you buy a whole cake, you will surely come to love it and not just for it’s peaceful manipulation of the mind and body."

Dizzying sweetness

"I’m not an expert in tasting raw puerhs and writing while under its influence (first time brewing it). It’s as satisfying as eating a very well balanced honey, nut, milk and dried yellow fruit cake, while standing in close vicinity to a fragrant bouquet of sweet smelling white flowers. When drinking it, first thing that hits is the thick sweetness that turns upon swallowing into a very short lived bitterness which then warps into a fragrant and again sweet & slightly astringent sensation that lasts fairly long afterwards. Solo session, 6g/150ml silver pot with brief 15-20s infusions at 90C. At the time of writing I’m 5-6 steeps in and the cha chi is calming, energising, focused and up-lifting. Feels as if I know exactly how to describe things, just that actually typing it out is a bit more challenging than it usually would be.. :D"
