Produced in 2000, this Menghai ripe spent its first years aging in Menghai and then continued in Kunming, a clean, natural progression that has shed any wet-pile roughness and layered in mature depth. The cup is dark, thick, and soothing, with that classic aged cacao–camphor profile and a gently warming energy.

In Summary

  • Region: greater Menghai area, Xishuangbanna, Yunnan

  • Type: ripe (shou) pu-erh, traditional wet-piling

  • Vintage: 2000

  • Storage: natural aging in Menghai, then dry Kunming storage to present

  • Format: loose leaf (散茶)

In short: a clean, well-matured year-2000 Menghai shou, thick, chocolatey, and quietly camphorous, but with the stamina and poise that make aged loose ripe so satisfying.

Great Intro

"This is a wonderful tea if rinsed properly to get the funkiness off!"

Great robust tea

"Fantastic tea. Great by itself or with a meal."

Christopher H. (5/5)

Disappointing

"Disappointing. Flavor is thick and muddy and heavy. Lacks any hint of brightness. It is devoid of high notes. I was so looking forward to it. Perhaps it was once great and just hasn't been stored optimally. Reminds me of some distinguished red wines that have stayed in the cellar too long and eventually "died. " I've drunk lots of shou Puer, including several from from Menghai 勐海。Just for comparison, this tea is nowhere near as pleasing to me as your "Jia Ji" loose-leaf ripe puer (有机甲级普洱熟茶。)"

A clean woody pu erh with strong focused energy

"Between this and the 1999 basket ripe. I definitely love this way more. Also ithink i like pu erh from menghai the best. Its very clean and a bit woody maybe cider. And brews forever. I brewed like 5L out of 10G in a 150ml gaiwan. Also i love how focused this tea makes me"

Smooth and complex

"Smooth and complex. Long lasting (takes many steeps). It's like smooth medicine whiskey!"
