Typically Yunnan green tea is made from hybridized varietals like Yun Kang #10, Chang Ye Bai Hao, or Yun Kang #100. These hybrids are drought-resistant and typically produce more yield. In recent years pure assamica (non-hybridized) bushes and trees have been used less for creating raw pu-erh and more for black tea and white tea. But why not green tea? Yunnan green tea is typically consumed almost entirely by people living in Yunnan and they quite enjoy the hybrid varietals (of which we sell many). As a result a pure assamica varietal green tea is something of a rarity.

Growing in Da Si Village at an altitude of 1700 meters this tea was plucked and processed from first flush tea leaves in early April. The resulting tea has the robustness and viscosity of raw pu-erh, but also has the chestnut green and floral character of a good Yunnan green tea!

So Good!

"Being pure Assamica, I assumed this tea would have a brash raw puerh-like bite. But I was very surprised. The dry leaves have a beautiful fruity aroma. The tea is very balanced with some nuttiness, a fruity / floral aspect, thick viscous body, and bold taste but no bitterness and barely any astringency even when brewing with water hot enough to make other green teas undrinkable. There is a strange but tasty flavor aspect that I guess is “malty”. But it’s weird because it’s not reminiscent of a red tea, white tea or Hei cha maltiness. Like other Yunnan green teas there is barely any umami. The leaves give flavor generously over the course of many steeps. Thank you YS for this interesting and unique tea experience!"

A hearty green tea for everyone

"If you could liquefy roasted Brazil nuts, then those would taste like this. Very smooth with a fragrance like a hardy minestrone. Quite delicious and definitely a good digestif after a heavy meal. 4 grams per 100 ml at 80 Celsius for 15 seconds plus 3 additional seconds after each infusion and I could pull out 5 or 6 good quality infusions and another 2-3 just okay ones."
