This third and final production is a cooperation between Hai Lang and another tea seller. 3000 kilos of Mao Cha all from just 2 villages in Bu Lang mountain area of Banna was pressed into these cakes. The Mao Cha is Spring 2005 tea and has been fermenting for 3 years in it loose "mao cha" form. The result is a tea cake that feels, looks and tastes much more like a 5 year aged cake. This cake was pressed in the Shuang Yi tea factory and this bears the mark of that tea factory. However, you will notice that the outer ring pattern on the wrapper is the same as the 2008 HLH Lao Ban-E wrapper, as well as the “普洱生茶” sqaure mark is present on both wrappers.

Hai Lang's commentary on this tea: Tea leaves are burly and stout in structure. White hairs are abundant on many of the leaves, while other leaves are greenish-bronze (when dry). The brewed tea liquor is honey-gold colored with amber tones. The tea itself mouth-feel is evident and pungent with bitter taste that gradually changes into a thick plump feeling in the mouth and throat. It brings a mouth-watering feeling to the tongue and mouth and strong thick after-taste. This tea does not have any smoky flavors or aromas. The aroma at the bottom of the tea cup is pleasant and strong with a sweet nectar-like feeling. The "mao cha" was stored for 3 years in Bu Lang mountain area of Banna. This uncompressed storage condition in warmer more humid conditions has brought about a more aged taste and feeling. The source of the color is anthocyanin, which changes color along with cell sap acidity. High levels of acidity lead to red color, while medium acidity is more purple, and high alkalinity tends toward indigo. Purplish red tea results from an inherited reaction to unfavorable hot and humid summer environmental conditions, providing the tea tree with a mechanism for fighting scorching ultraviolet rays.

Pu-erh tea growing areas tend to be between 1000 and 2000m elevation. According to surveys, higher altitude tea growing areas receive as much as 8 times the ultraviolet light of lower altitude growing areas. During the dry spring tea season, the atmosphere tends to be quite dusty which serves to reflect, scatter, and absorb most ultraviolet light. Entering into the rainy season, atmospheric dust is frequently washed away by rain. These clean, clear atmospheric conditions allow virtually all UV light reach the surface. In order to resist damage from this shortwave radiation, tea leaves produce anthocyanin, which can reflect away a portion of the UV light hitting the leaves. Although a southern Yunnan tea field during the high of the summer is a sea of green, most eye-catching are the specks of purplish-red scattered throughout. Purple bud tea trees occupy approximately 1-2% of all tea trees, and occur with varying intensities of purple.

Purplish red bud tea has throughout history been regarded as a standard for quality tea. Lu Yu in the "Cha Jing" evaluating the color of tea leaves, came to the early conclusion: "bright cliffs and gloomy forests, purple is the highest and green the second". Purple tea features prominent fragrance and rich flavor. A small number of tea trees growing on the rocky slopes of Fujian's Zhengyi mountain, because of their red color, are given the famous name Da Hong Pao. The brewed tea is aromatic, thick and sweet but not entirely lacking in bitterness and astringency. Mang Zhi village tea leaves are dark olive green color when brewed. Careful attention was paid to the processing of this mao cha giving it an even taste and color with little or no black flecks (if the leaves are signed during the kill-green process). The mao cha was carefully steamed and pressed with 40 kilogram stone presses in the traditional manner and each stack of 7 cakes was packed in the highest grade bamboo leaf tongs for collection and long-term storage.

Important note: All 5 of the teas from our Autumn Yi Wu series have been hand-stamped with the name of the village in Chinese at the tea factory. However, the person responsible for stamping the wrappers (in most cases) did not use enough ink. Before sending to you we will add an additional stamp with the letters "M Z" just below the chinese stamp on the front of the cake to help you identify the cakes. If you order a whole tong, there will be no added "M Z" stamp on the cakes as adding it would require us to break open the bamboo leaf tong.

In total just 40 kilograms produced.

Net Weight: 250 grams per cake
Compression date: October 15th 2011
Harvest time: October 2011

Xi Kong tea like Yi Bang is special in that it is not large leaf varietal but rather a primitive small leaf varietal that has grown in this area for hundreds if not thousands of years. Like other small leaf varietal wild arbor tea trees in Yunnan (Jing Mai), the flavor is lighter and more smooth, but the aroma is pungent and fruity.

Xi Kong and Yi Bang are more similar to each other than our other Fall Yi Wu teas, but I find Xi Kong to have something darker and more pungent than Yi Bang. Xi Kong's aroma is more subtle and it's taste is incredibly textured and fills the mouth and throat imparting a wonderful sensation! I recommend drinking this tea on a sunny day in a warm place to allow for a full release of it's aroma and cha qi!

This year's autumn production comes from hundreds of year old tea trees!

This tea was compressed in a small tea factory in Yi Wu town where unusually large 40 kilogam stone presses were used. Low temperature (35C) “baking” was used to dry these cakes after the compression process thus preserving their integrity! In total just 40 kilograms of this tea has been produced. We have delayed sales of this cake for several weeks to allow the water vapor from pressing to dissipate. Further aging will only improve this wonderful tea!

Important note: All 5 of the teas from our Autumn Yi Wu series have been hand-stamped with the name of the village in Chinese at the tea factory.
