First flush of pure bud "Dian Hong" Feng Qing area tea was used to compose this special process tea!

The freshly-picked tea is wilted and then briefly fried in tropical Yunnan muscovado style (un-processed) red sugar. The sugar is mixed with water, and used sparingly in the frying process of the leaves. The brewed tea has a noticeably sweet taste and a nice, malty, full mouth-feel. The sweetness imparted by the processing is subtle and not overpowering at all! The unprocessed sugar (from cane stalks) imparts a special aroma and taste which comingles with the tea, making it a lovely experience.

A unique tea!

Strong almost smokey tea unlike any other Yunnan

"We don't care much for this tea. The website review underplays the strongly earthy and somewhat smoke flavored character this tea has. It has to be brewed with short steeps to be remotely palatable to my tastes. Anything western style and it becomes too dense, bold, and earthy. Tastes like the Muscavado sugar used in the processing was about to become carbonized. I'd never guess this was a Yunnan grown tea if not told so."

An interesting tea for 4 and a half stars

"This is a fine, strong, dark coloured, sweetish tea. Having read about how it is made, I can definitely taste the molasses flavour, which makes this tea interesting. If it was possible, it would get 4 and a half stars..."

Unique flavor

"This is an interesting black tea. The flavor is unique just be careful because it is very much oversteepable unlike some of the oolongs."

Alex

"It is a very nice sort of tea. I have being purchasing it regularly for about 6 years. It is a bit different from season to season- Sometimes more sweet sometimes less but always delicious."

Durable, full flavor

"Dry aroma is quite mild, yet sweet, pleasant and inviting. Before I get into flavor, I will suggest: be brief on the brew. I enjoy my hong cha in an 8oz mug using 4-5g of leaves. Pouring the water through the infuser 'til the cup is full is all this needs on the first steep to bring out the best of it's character. The liquor by then is already an opaque, dark brown. While the taste did not stand out for me as exceptional in a specific way, it's balance and durability stood out over time. It starts off as a very _nice_ black tea, if unextraordinary. Sweet potato and lightly toasted bread come to mind, creating a full flavor on the palate. While I find I do prefer other YS hong chas off the hop, some of those start strong and fade, where this is fresh tasting through my 3rd 8 oz infusion. Overall, there is nothing NOT to like here, a dependable companion tea you can enjoy at work or with meals."

Excellent tea, if a little confusing at first.

"This tea is absolutely delicious. It's flavour has.. what I might call a 'gentle purity' to it; that is to say, it's not blatantly in your face, but the flavour is gentle and clear, and perfectly noticeable without being overpowering. It's malty, and the sugary aftertaste and aroma have got me eagerly attracted to more cups of it. I'm rating it 4, rather than 5 stars, because at first, it basically tasted like the other three black teas in my collection, but then I started to pick out the subtleties and differences, and finally noticed that delicious sweetness."

Exceptional Tea!

"This tea is supper unique!!! Rich flavor over the course of many infusions!!! The leaves are a beautiful rich gloss black. The taste is definitely sweet and toasty, with a thick mouth feel. Everyone in the family loved it (even people who do not like tea), it is an experience!!!!! Will be keeping this tea around for sure."
