This is an excellent Cha Gao (tea resin) made entirely from first flush of spring 2013 Jinggu area Pu-erh tea, which was processed into Cha Gao in 2014. These mini 0.75 gram bricks are individually wrapped and perfect for making tea on the go.  We recommend dissolving these in about 200-400ml of hot water.  These can also be dissolved in cold water as well (might take a bit more time).

Smooth raw pu-erh tea resin with a thick body and sweet taste.

The mini bricks are average about  0.75 grams each, but can weigh as little as 0.5g, or as much as 1.0g. As such, we sell them by weight, which includes the (negligible) weight of the foil wrapper.

Cha Gao - Instant Pu-erh Tea 茶膏 :

This specialty of Yunnan province uses a technique to take the liquid from the tea leaves and then solidifies the liquid into shapes which can easily be dissolved in water to make tea. 'Cha Gao' literally means 'tea paste', and this technique evolved from a process developed in the Tang 唐 and Song 宋 dynasties, while the process of making Pu-erh Cha Gao in particular was enhanced and perfected during the Qing 清 dynasty, which was considered to be the pinnacle of 'cha gao' quality. Unfortunately, imperial techniques employed during the Qing dynasty were lost with the collapse of the Qing dynasty in 1911, and attempts to revive the industry in subsequent decades fell short and the practice of making tea-paste practically vanished. Now, with modern technology it is possible to produce tea-paste that is of similar quality to that which was produced during the Qing dynasty. When preparing, pour the water over the brick little by little to allow it time to completely dissolve; some cha gao also require that they be placed into water that has already been poured.

Very good cha gao

"This is my first try on raw puerh cha gao, and am enjoying it very much every day now. One little piece in the thermos with hot water, and ready to go. It's very much enjoyable as a daily drinker, approachable for an unexperienced tea drink like my daughter. It has smooth, sweet, subtlely vegetal, umami character all in one even though the floral aroma is a bit mild, which is expected from a tea resin. Very pleasant experience. It's incomparable to instant coffee, it's a thousands time better than that -- instant coffee is not a coffee, but this is a nice tea. Highly recommended."

Dried Apricot

"Back for another review of this cha-gao after i have finished my 25 grams and ordered more . I recommend using about 200-170ml of water for every . 5 grams of cha gao , this results in a slightly thick mouthfeel and a kind of sweet dired apricot flavor and what i can only describe as the slightest bit of the aftertaste of a semi sweet plain butter cookie , balanced by a little bitterness ."
