This is a Spring 2013 Yi Wu cake that was wet-piled for about 25 days (instead of the full 45 days). This is what's called half-fermented or half ripe pu-erh tea (半发酵普洱), a process first popularized in the late 1990's. The tea soup is a light brown color that's clear, the smell is sweet and earthy... but without that wettish fermentation smell. The taste has character of both ripe and raw pu-erh and retains an Yi Wu region sweetness and charm. This is a tea that can be enjoyed now but to reach it's full potential would need another 5 to 10 years.

Region specific and small batch half-ripened teas such as this production are very rare and provide tea drinkers an opportunity to explore a little-known side of Pu-erh.

Ripe that tastes like an aged raw

"This is the only ripe tea I've had that tastes similar to a middle aged raw puer. The partial fermentation has resulted in a dark hunter green tone to the leaf rather than the usual brown/black of fully fermented tea. There is a bit of wet pile aroma in the rinse, though this it does not carry over into the liquor; this cake is drinkable without further aging though it could certainly benefit from 5-10 years storage as indicated in the description. The flavour is potent and sweet, though the tea lacks the viscosity of good ripe tea. Unfortunately, the cake is rather tightly compressed, and it is very difficult to break off large pieces. Overall, this is an excellent tea with a unique processing style that I'd love to see become more widely utilized (this is the only half ripe tea I could find, though I do recall YS used to offer a late 90s or early 2000s Jing brand half ripe which has long since sold out)."

An everyday staple

"This tea has a great calming cha qi but also provides alertness and focus. I found myself enjoying this tea more than others costing 2 times more. The flavor is a pleasant Yiwu dark fruit with a little half ripe citrus spice (like chili tamarind). Easy to drink and easy on the pocket book, highly recommended."

Interesting and engaging

"Tight compression so try to break a piece off the right size. Definitely an interesting and engaging tea. Wild progression Shu taste with sheng aftertaste. Then sheng taste with shu aftertase. Then shu taste with sheng aftertaste. Then interesting combinations thereof. Good Yiwu character throughout. Good mouthfeel, sticky throat, mellow body feels. Get a sample."
