Our Red Horse mini cake is made entirely from Gongting grade ripe pu-erh tea from Yong De county tea leaves.  2013 harvested tea leaves were fermented in early 2014 and then finally pressed into these lovely 100 gram mini cakes at the very end of 2014.

Yong De ripe tea is strong in taste and aroma with kind of camphor lingering after-taste.  With a little age the tea begins to take on a thick sweetness and hint of rose/floral taste.

Gongting grade ripe pu-erh is the smallest leaf grade.  It tends to be potent in taste and aroma but is less infusable than coarser leaf grades.

100 grams per cake (7 cakes per bamboo leaf tong)

strong taste, clean cha qi

"I like this cake a lot, everything about it is enjoyable. Probably the best $20 one could spend for this type of experience. First off, the compression on the cake itself is excellent - I went straight for the center and it broke apart easily without crumbling or dusting. Clearly this cake is made & has been stored well. Aroma on the dry cake is magnificent - robust and pungent, you can take a deep breath of this and feel the complex experience that awaits once you get hot water involved in the equation. This cake is pure gongting material so it's really about what you get on the front end of the session. Learn to work the first 4-6 cups to really push the leaves within that range and you will see what makes this cake such a dynamic and powerful experience. From cup to cup, this tea maintains a smoothness that is deceiving because it is so thick and creamy at the same time. With a mouthfeel as soft as this, it's easy to miss some of the nuanced aspects of this tea's personality. But these become more and more apparent as you continue to get to know this tea. Look for subtle textures and sensations, like that warming floral sweetness that creeps up from the back of the throat the more you work your way through the session. Cha qi is thoroughly enjoyable, it comes out more and more in each cup and sits very well in the body for how apparent it is in the head. Time has tempered this cake very well, and the strength of the cha qi is matched by how gracefully it is delivered."

Classic, not fancy but solid value. Excellent value for the price.

"A good, affordable, comforting little cake : a keeper ! Nice cake, very easy to break in ; leaves will come off with little effort. Wet leaves have a nice scent of hot silex and hot iron, along with the expected wood and autumn leaves notes. Taste is classic earthy ripe PuErh with interesting hot wood and raisin notes, like it were brewed in an old oak barrel. Some'sweetness to it. Very soft, no bitterness, and most importantly : no trace of fishy smell. Very easy and comforting. Liquor is red with a definite pink/rose hue, not as dark as many other ripe teas. Taste is light but will remain steady through many brewings, and give many infusions before starting to fade. Not a very complex taste, but very soft and easy to drink. After-taste lingers in the mouth in a nice way. To sum it up : a light tea with classic shou PuErh taste, not outstanding in that it does not deliver a super strong pack, nor surprising notes ; but it is very enjoyable and easy to drink, and for this price it is a very good buy.."

[Newbie] Great for its price,

"[Newbie] Great for its price, fair number of infusions, good but simple flavor. Solid choice for a daily drinker and good intro to ripe Pu-erh."
