The source of the color is anthocyanin, which changes color along with cell sap acidity. High levels of acidity lead to red color, while medium acidity is more purple, and high alkalinity tends toward indigo. Purplish red tea results from an inherited reaction to unfavorable hot and humid summer environmental conditions, providing the tea tree with a mechanism for fighting scorching ultraviolet rays.

Pu-erh tea growing areas tend to be between 1000 and 2000m elevation. According to surveys, higher altitude tea growing areas receive as much as 8 times the ultraviolet light of lower altitude growing areas. During the dry spring tea season, the atmosphere tends to be quite dusty which serves to reflect, scatter, and absorb most ultraviolet light. Entering into the rainy season, atmospheric dust is frequently washed away by rain. These clean, clear atmospheric conditions allow virtually all UV light reach the surface. In order to resist damage from this shortwave radiation, tea leaves produce anthocyanin, which can reflect away a portion of the UV light hitting the leaves. Although a southern Yunnan tea field during the high of the summer is a sea of green, most eye-catching are the specks of purplish-red scattered throughout. Purple bud tea trees occupy approximately 1-2% of all tea trees, and occur with varying intensities of purple.

Purplish red bud tea has throughout history been regarded as a standard for quality tea. Lu Yu in the "Cha Jing" evaluating the color of tea leaves, came to the early conclusion: "bright cliffs and gloomy forests, purple is the highest and green the second". Purple tea features prominent fragrance and rich flavor. A small number of tea trees growing on the rocky slopes of Fujian's Zhengyi mountain, because of their red color, are given the famous name Da Hong Pao.

The highest elevation is 1850 meters, with an average of 1700 meters (the sameas Lao Banzhang mountain). There are currently around 1000 acres of tea under cultivation. One hundred thirty years ago, the current Banzhang settlement was founded by residents of Pasha who moved there to cultivate tea. Pasha Ancient Tea Mountain is shrouded in fog year-round and features abundant rainfall. The tea producing area lies between 1600 and 1800m elevation and is in an area of luxuriant growth with rich ground cover and fertile soil. Tea tree growth is extremely productive, with an early budding period and long harvest periods, producing large healthy tea leaves with striking silver tips -- excellent quality tea. Pasha wild arbor tea is made from selected ancient arbor leaves grown at an elevation of 1700 meters on Pasha Ancient Tea Mountain in Menghai county.

A blend of 2011 and 2012 autumn teas from Xishuangbanna. Entirely wild and ancient arbor teas from four distinct areas of Banna. Nice balanced blend that delivers strong mouth-feel, aroma, complexity and infusability!

"Gu Hua Xiang 谷花香" is Chinese for "Autumn Aroma"!

Our Autumn production is stone-pressed by traditional method and dried with low temperature air drying. Man Zhuan is one of the six famous tea mountains in Banna and is just north of Yi Wu. This is our fourth production of tea from this area is from the same family as 2011 and 2010! We have selected autumn harvest (谷花茶) wild arbor material from the area of "Man Zhuan" (蛮砖), a higher mountain areas in the Yi Wu mountain. Man Zhuan area teas are known for their special thick aroma and a taste that with age becomes stronger and more textured. This tea comes from wild arbor trees between 200 and 300 years old growing on a sunny south facing slope. When brewing the tea you will notice the tea soup is a bright yellow-gold and clear, the aroma is penetrating and the tea is full in the mouth. The flavor is textured and thick with a strong almost chocolate-like after-taste. This is one of the more smooth and aromatic of the Yi Wu area teas. The brewed leaves are thick and stout with a dark olive-green color, attesting to their wild arbor origin. This tea was compressed in a small tea factory in Yi Wu town where unusually large 40 kilogam stone presses were used. Low temperature (35C) “baking” was used to dry these cakes after the compression process thus preserving their integrity!

In total just 30 kilograms of this tea has been produced.
