This "Yu Lan Xiang" (玉兰香) Dan Cong is from the middle mountain elevation (1150 meters) in Tou She village in the Wu Dong mountains in Northern Guangdong. "Yu Lan Xiang" means literally "Magnolia Aroma" and is a unique varietal that is native to Wu Dong area. Yu Lan Xiang varietal is a naturally occurring hybrid of several local Dan Cong varietals and grows mostly in the middle mountain area.

Spring Harvest notes: Spring picked Middle Mountain Dan Cong is typically harvested in early April! Our Spring Yu Lan Xiang is fresh, umami, bitter, and astringent, but also has a long lasting fruity sweetness and heady aroma. Like the winter harvest (also available), this a prominent sweet magnolia flower nectar aroma and taste!

Winter Harvest notes:  Winter picked Dan Cong is typically picked and processed in Late-October into mid-November and carries a unique taste and feeling.  Our winter harvested "Yu Lan Xiang" has a sweet magnolia nectar aroma and thick sweet floral taste that is countered by some vegetal bitterness, however the sweet floral character with a creamy taste/feeling dominates the palate.

Winter Harvest is early November

Spring Harvest is early April

Excellent tea overall, amazing at this price point!

"Dry smell: sweet bread with subtle berries Wet smell: sweet bread with very pronounced dark berries Taste: astringent mouth tickling flower (magnolia?) taste with a long lasting vegetal aftertaste. potent cha qi & mouthfeel

"This dan cong stands out for its powerful mouthfeel and very potent cha qi, with an aftertaste that continues to build on the palate and lingers for a very long time. It's the type of dan cong you would buy if you were looking for a whole experience rather than just a flavor profile. There is so much to feel and perceive beyond just what your tongue and palate will convey. In particular, the cha qi is truly exceptional. It's very heady and stimulating, but as strong as it is, it is equally graceful and soothing, which is a very rare combination and worth seeking out for people who chase the qi. Across the full session, I get tons of fresh-cut florals that bring a distinct cooling sensation which reminds me of magnolia and jasmine. The floral layers to this tea are sublime - I'm not getting just the sweet, fragrant blossoms, I'm getting the whole flower along with the stalk and stem, which add some vegetal bitterness that makes this tea feel so fresh and deeply layered. This one requires a medium-high level of skill to brew. Just my opinion, but if you want to really appreciate the magnificence of this tea, you should probably go around the block with other dan cong first. Try the Saturn Peach aroma and Sweet Potato aroma that Scott offers along with this and you'll have a well-rounded journey. I find myself getting 8 to 10 cups every session. Relative to other dan cong, I push this tea just a bit harder on the front end to bring that bitterness out."

Unique but not for everyone

"Unlike most standard dan congs, with a heavier body and less upfront sweetness. Unique but I still prefer the regular stuff more."

Wonderful tea

"Different from most dan congs but brilliant! Super floral notes, but with a lot of bitterness, which I like. However, jasmine and magnolia play the leading role, it tastes almost like flavored tea."

Incredible, and exactly as described.

"I don't have the ability to say with certainty that the aroma is indeed that of magnolia, but I can say that the aroma of flowers now permeates the room—like a garden in bloom. The floral sweetness follows through to the brew, adding a dimension of creamy vegetal-ness to the mix with a touch of bitterness to balance the sweetness and add complexity to keep the interest. In short, the Dancong is incredible and fresh and perfect for this (very!) early and rainy spring afternoon."
