Wen Zhong Dan Cong (文种) is a high mountain Dan Cong from Wu Dong area of Guangdong.  It's also picked the earliest of any Dan Cong's and has a small-medium leaf size.  Wen Zhong varietal is low yield and is only harvested in spring.  The processing is typical of Dan Cong with a brown-green leaf.  The aroma of the dry leaf has hints of fruit, flowers and cannabis.  The taste is floral, thick and sweet.  It's very infusable and the pungent nature of it's aroma and taste leaves a strong impression on those who partake in it.  Cha Qi is very strong, attesting to it's high mountain origin.

Great Dan Cong on its

"Great Dan Cong on its own, yet a bit uninspired for this price, feels a bit overpriced, hence only 4/5. Brewing params: 5g/100ml, 1st brew 95C 15s, subsequent brews 100C 5s Tasting notes: first a very strong roasted taste, almost yancha like. After many brews the roast taste goes away revealing typical floral notes, unfortunately not very varied and the last brews do not contain any sweetness"

amazing

"I've had this one a few times over the years and every time I drink it, I discover something new. It's a special tea for sure. This one feels and tastes like a Shiguping Wulong crossed with old Shui Xian - it has a buttery-smooth and silky texture reminiscent of a good Baozhong, harmoniously layered with all of the elements you would expect of a premium dan cong: powerful mouthfeel, complex flavor profile consisting of honey, florals, and woodsy-spice characteristics that are subtle but present and persistent, with a long-lasting aftertaste. There is a fantastic evolution of flavor, excellent mouthfeel, clean and crisp finish with a sweet minerality that is detectable across the whole mouth and back of the throat. The leaves maintain their integrity across 12-14 cups, it's hard to wash the flavor out, and at the end of the session the leaves smell wonderful. The aroma coming off the bottom of an empty cup is like crack. I cannot get enough of it, it's very difficult to describe because it introduces a layer of experience that is somehow different than either the aroma of the dry/wet leaf and the taste in the cup... it's got its own thing going on that adds a nice touch. Wen Zhong is rare and I'm not sure how Scott gets it at this price... it's a good deal and I hope he continues to source this one."

Strong but elegant Yan Yun form a brilliantly grown and processed tea.

"At first steep, taste takes centre stage. This Sweet – Floral/Fruits – Yellow – Butter/Cream, with a teeny hint of Minerality, provides the broadcast note as other florals suggest greater complexity in the backdrop. Mouthfeel is soft and very lush. Magnolia, with Osmanthus providing a rich peachy note are both present in the refreshingly narcotic aroma. The narcotic element is interesting, redolent of Gardenia [Sweet – Floral/Fruits – White – Gardenia] yet, it reminds me of good CBD oil. By the second steep, mouthfeel has built to a thick, almost cloying fusion of Butter/Cream and CBD oil. Lingering nose-feel alludes to a very deep Gardenia. More is happening in the background but by now I am tranquillized by the tea. Cha Qi (茶氣) fosters whole-body mindfulness (my Pure Land chanting box is playing the background) as an almost prefect tension between past and future. Like watching hands of a clock seemingly rebel or struggle to tic and toc forwards. Aromas more evident as Qi pauses that tic-toc of time and enhances the senses. I wait just to the revel in its fruity-floral intricacy before finding just the same in every slurp of the liquor. I brewed it two days in a row and, as I grew accustomed to the tea, something wonderful happened. I could step effortlessly into a vast, almost hidden, minerality. Perfect Butter/Cream silkiness supports and uplifts to guide you towards the life force of this tea with such strong but elegant Yan Yun (Rock Knowing). Wen Zhong can refer to a single large tea tree owned by the Wen family with a production of about 3kg and the dry leaf looks similar. Phoenix Oolong Lao Cong Wen Zhong Dan Zhou 鳳凰烏崠老欉文種単株 where Dan Zhu signifies the single tree. The Zen element in this gem perhaps. In Gong Fu style with short steeps you can get 15 steeps."
