Spring 2007 harvest of 1 leaf / 1 bud and 2 leaf / 1 bud purple tea!  Aged over 7 years in Jinggu town's sub-tropical conditions has given this tea a smooth flowery and thick taste.  The oils of the tea have literally "sweated out" onto the paper wrapper (staining it).  Very nicely aged tea with strong cha qi, but still retains a unique vegetal taste/feeling that only purple tea can impart!

357 grams per cake

For more information on Purple tea read below:

Yunnan pu-erh tea grows in the superior environment of low latitude, high altitude South Asian tropics and achieves many qualities of superior tea. Among pu-erh tea, purplish red bud tea is particularly valued.

During the hot, humid summer and fall seasons a portion of tea tree buds are purplish red colored. The source of the color is anthocyanin, which changes color along with cell sap acidity. High levels of acidity lead to red color, while medium acidity is more purple, and high alkalinity tends toward indigo. Purplish red tea results from an inherited reaction to unfavorable hot and humid summer environmental conditions, providing the tea tree with a mechanism for fighting scorching ultraviolet rays.

Pu-erh tea growing areas tend to be between 1000 and 2000m elevation. According to surveys, higher altitude tea growing areas receive as much as 8 times the ultraviolet light of lower altitude growing areas. During the dry spring tea season, the atmosphere tends to be quite dusty which serves to reflect, scatter, and absorb most ultraviolet light. Entering into the rainy season, atmospheric dust is frequently washed away by rain. These clean, clear atmospheric conditions allow virtually all UV light reach the surface. In order to resist damage from this shortwave radiation, tea leaves produce anthocyanin, which can reflect away a portion of the UV light hitting the leaves. Although a southern Yunnan tea field during the high of the summer is a sea of green, most eye-catching are the specks of purplish-red scattered throughout. Purple bud tea trees occupy approximately 1-2% of all tea trees, and occur with varying intensities of purple.

Purplish red bud tea has throughout history been regarded as a standard for quality tea. Lu Yu in the "Cha Jing" evaluating the color of tea leaves, came to the early conclusion: "bright cliffs and gloomy forests, purple is the highest and green the second". Purple tea features prominent fragrance and rich flavor. A small number of tea trees growing on the rocky slopes of Fujian's Zhengyi mountain, because of their red color, are given the famous name Da Hong Pao. Another historically famous purple tea is Zhejiang province's Guzhu Zisun.

Purple Bud Tea, grown in high mountain ancient tea fields, is hand-picked by growers who select only young tender buds from the purple tea trees. It is solely and painstakingly processed to produce a very small quantity of heavenly tea.

Purple bud tea anthocyanin can be bitter, so it is recommended that those who do not enjoy bitter flavors reduce the strength of their brew so as to enjoy the fine tea flavor.

Purple powerhouse

"First 2 quick rinses, and fort 2 gong fu brews are very astringent yet, the purple is in the finish taste. Initial aroma is faintly herbal and floral, faint camphor in background. 3rd brew and after, is where this tea emerges, the astringency fades, the florals open up, and there is ripe plum or dark/tart cherry aroma and tastes. Even after 6-7 gong fu brews, this tea is going strong. Left leaves overnight in fridge, to see what would happen to it, even better as a rebrew (gong fu's # 8-11) the next day. Mellow but potent cha qi. Great drinker for hot weather days!"

No judgment but try it

"I enjoyed the complexity of this tea when I drank it hot. I found the earthy notes were quite strong and agree with other reviewers it is a good all day tea - just a gentle alertness. But that gentle wakefulness is why I like Pu-erh tea better than any other. I am new to tea drinking and don’t have the experience to talk about flavor note or expansions and textures. I can only speak about what pictures come forward in my mind when I taste a tea I enjoy. So here’s where I ask you to suspend criticism. I got distracted and as the brewed tea sat in the cup, it got cold and darker. I drank it and discovered a sweeter and more herby flavor. I had a picture of misty mountains and fog with the scent of young peach blossoms on the breeze. I felt lighter physically and mentally. I enjoyed it so much that I began to drink it cold from then on."

Aged Purple tea!

"It has a lot of aged aroma, so i can only assume that it was stored in humid climate. The tea is interesting to say the least. I can imagine this tea, when young, being very bitter and astringent. But now it really tastes mellow. The flavor is weird. It's like plum sweetnees that is hidden somewhere in aged puer. It is quite acidic, it lingers nicely on the sides of my tongue. When brewed gongfucha - it can sustain 10 steeping, but the flavour is pretty constant. The compression on the can is tight, so every leaf in my brew is extremely broken."

Balanced and suitable for any time of day

"I am a fan of Yunnan Sourcing. Reasons include: very wide portfolio of different teas; excellent explanations of the teas (at some point, I hope to better understand the tasting notes; prices are competitive for the quality of the teas and parcel sizes; still looking for that one book that will unlock the tasting notes; fair shipping costs and transit time. I have been buying the monthly premium samplers. Then I embarked out and tried the Purple sampler....that is when I discovered this tea....there have been many teas from the Yunnan Sourcing samplers that I have noted as future single buys....but this tea precipitated immediate action to buy a cake. Bravo, Yunnan Sourcing. Please keep the quality, variability, thorough explanations, and fair pricing in your brand."

Great tea!!

"This is a wonderful daily drink, and while I'm sure it would age beautifully I'm certain it won't last that long. There's something special about the mushroomy, leathery notes found in this tea. Would definitely buy again!"

Exactly as described.

"First of all I'm very satisfied by the services overall. The tea looks like decent quality and it does indeed offers what only purple tea does. Smoky, leathery and mushroom taste with a mineral and sometimes salivating aftertaste. Also i was surprised to experience some fruity aromas on some of the later infusions. After the 3rd-4th steeping some slightly fruity aromas emerge which is kinda rare for a sheng of this kind. Summing up It's not the strongest purple shemg you can find but it is a decent all-around tea for very good price."
