This lovely tea is a classic Yunnan black tea grown in Ning'er county of Simao.  This has been picked as 1 leaf to 1 bud sets and processed carefully by rolling the tea into pellets.  Like most Yunnan black teas, the tea benefits from short-term aging and develops a malty sweet taste and lovely fragrance with a hint of chocolate and flowers.

Spring & Autumn Harvest can differ a bit.  Spring is a little less tippy gold, but taste is more robust.  Autumn is more tippy gold and a bit more easy-going and sweet in taste.  With age (Spring 2019) it develops a bit more honey mellowness.  If in doubt about which one you'd like, try a small amount of each!

Reviews

Delicious and strong

"I like my tea to be strong in flavor, instead of delicate and this tea fits the bill perfectly. Definitely need gaiwan so you can do short infusions because the tea will get bitter if infused long, especially in the first 4-5 infusions. I started with 10 seconds for the first 2. The flavor comes and hits you in the face even without the need for longer times. It has a nice mouthfeel, which I appreciate. Overall it is a great tea!"

Malty!

"Malty, smokey, chocolatey. Warming sensation. Taste just like how it smells. Short infusions 10 seconds ish It can get a bit more astringent and drying when over brewed. It's perfect for a cold day I am going to try with sugar next time. I think it will taste even more addictive"

Strong caffeine

"I was looking for a black tea with high caffeine, and be careful what you wish for. It tastes good, and it hits like a truck. I brewed at 205F for 3 minutes in a western-style tea brewer (Finum Tea Control Pot)."

Sesh J. (5/5)

"Everything arrived perfectly secure, even the ceramic cups were intact. I also recieved a free bonus bag of tea. Thank you to Trevor Cornell from the customer service team for handling any issues with my package."

Q&A

How long is the "short-term aging" recommended?
3-6 months from the harvest date. Although black teas like this can be aged for several years if kept sealed.
This year's version says Autumn 2020, while the description says first flush spring harvest. Is the 2020 an Autumn harvest this year?
You can choose between Spring 2019 and Autumn 2020.
What would be a good gong fu brewing advice for this one? I have brewed dian hongs with 90 celcius, 5 grams, 20 seconds first infusion, +5 seconds next infusions, but this one is rolled so I guess it would require different parameters. Thanks!
You can brew the same... if you want it to unfurl faster you can increase the time of the early steeps.
How does it compare to last year's (Spring)? The pictures look different, with this one seeming to be a lighter brown than last year's. I absolutely loved the Spring 2017 version and I wanted to know if this one is comparable to that. Thanks!
It's the same grower as last year. This year I updated the picture with a picture taken in natural sunlight. Last year's picture was taken in a light box.
