Ban Po Lao Zhai is one of many Nan Nuo area villages.  It lies just to the south of the Jinghong to Menghai road at an altitude of about 1500 meters.  Old tea trees and younger wild arbor tea trees grow on the steep hills surrounding the village.  Our production is entirely first flush of Spring 2011 material from tea trees between 60 and 200 years old.  The brewed leaves are stout and deep green in color.  The tea brews up a thick golden tea soup with strong pungent aroma and abundant cha qi.  If you enjoyed our 2010 Nan Nuo Ya Kou production I think you will find this is a nice contrast to that.

In total just 50 kilograms produced.  Stone-Pressed in the traditional method and wrapped in durable hand-made paper.

400 grams per cake (7 cakes per bamboo leaf tong)

Overall rating: 5.0 / 5 from 2 reviews.

2011 Ban Po Lao Zhai.

"The first time trying this tea. It reminds me of fresh autumn leaves. A nice slight bitterness which I like. A very smooth kind of creamy mouth feel. A good cha qi. Very enjoyable."

A 'Body' Tea; Sweet and Orangey Bitterness; Classic Menghai

"What I would call a 'body' tea. The absence of very high notes in the fragrance reveals this before you taste the liquor. The fragrance is sweet, lemony, orangey and somewhat earthy. It is warm, round and soft. The taste is similar. Immediately you are struck by the thick texture and expansive flavour. After several infusions, what this flavour amounts to is a kind of orangey bitterness (pleasant bitterness, not unpleasant), not unlike dried apricots. Often, you will notice this deep, orangey aftertaste turn to something like milk chocolate. After eating milk chocolate, you will notice a certain lingering aftertaste. There is a similar quality to this tea. This Nannuo tea is not unlike a tea I've had from Mannuo, which is close by. Very much classic Menghai, I suppose. It is a warm and satisfying 'body' tea with an expansiveness in the mouth; there is sweetness and bitterness; it is very well balanced."
