This is a first flush of Spring 2018 "Huang Pian" from old tea trees in area of Bang Dong village in Lincang.  Huang Pian (黄片) are mature leaves that are typically removed from the finished mao cha before pressing.  Huang Pian being more mature and larger leaves are typically quite sweet and pleasant to drink, especially those that come from older tea trees.

These Huang Pian dragon balls are certainly pleasant to drink, not weak at all, but less bitter and astringent than a traditional plucked (2 leaf to 1 bud) raw pu-erh.  You might find yourself really enjoying these.  They will age gracefully developing more honey-like sweetness as the years pass.

These Dragon Balls were made by my mother in-law and father-in-law. They make them in their spare time.  They use little pieces of cotton to compress them instead of saran wrap.  Saran wrap compression is the most common method because it's faster, but it causes off gassing into the tea since the tea must be steamed to soften and is very hot. We use cotton, which is safe.

100% of the profits from this Dragon Ball will go directly to my father/mother-in-law.   We will give them it to them on Chinese New Year as a little red packet since they won't accept money directly from my wife or I.  Most likely they will put most of it in the bank for their retirement!

Each Dragon Ball is roughly 7 grams of tea (+/- 0.5 grams)

Only 1400 Dragon Balls made for Spring 2018 (about 10 kilograms)

Compression is way too hard.

"The compression is off the charts, it will not unravel. Hence it also does not have a lot of aroma or taste, even after forcefully breaking it apart it won’t give a lot. The aromas I am getting are mandarine and vanilla."

Great Raw Puer

"I like to do long steeps and this never gets bitter and only improves complexity."

Betsy R. (4/5)

Delicious

"Very smooth, sweet taste; They aren't lying about the dried apricot flavor. This tea tastes like what I wish green tea tasted like. Planty, but in a very good way."

So good!

"I usually but ripe pu'erh tea but I wanted to try raw for a change. It was light and very fresh tasting. Even my husband who is not a tea guy really liked it."

Natasha N. (5/5)

Enjoyable

"Loose compression. Fruity sweetness but can be slightly bitter at the end. Smooth and abit of Cha Qi. Really enjoyed this."

Lorraine L. (4/5)

Cute

"These mini balls are nicely rolled and cutely wrapped in paper. I found them to have a moderate level of astringency and some light bitterness. The texture was smooth. There's a light floral taste/aroma to these, more so than many young pu-erhs I've had. The physical effect is energizing and alert."

Good!!

"I really liked this raw pu-erh tea dragon ball! Gong fu steeped it for about 8-10 steeping and then put it in a tumbler with ice to drink the rest of the day. Turned out quite good!"

Christopher H. (5/5)

Fruity and delightful.

"This was my first purchase of any pu-erh tea ever, and I was delighted with the flavor and smoothness. Ordering more now."

Q&A

I have two questions 1. How should these be steeped and for how long? 2. If I was going to ferment them what's the best way to store them? Also, I think you should add steeping directions to description on your teas for people like me that have no idea how to steep them.
Check out our brewing guide here, these are brewed just the same as any other pu-erh tea. https://yunnansourcing.com/pages/brewing-guide-for-green-black-oolong-and-pu-erh-teas If you want to age them just leave the bag cracked open and store like you would your pu-erh teas.
