This is a wonderfully complex Liu Bao from the Wuzhou area of Guangxi. It was harvested and processed in 2019 from old bushes.

This Liu Bao is very cleanly stored with little to no mustiness. The taste is thick, sweet with earth and wood flavors and a long lasting hui gan. The leaves that come in the basket are not a specific leaf grade but rather reflect the 2 leaf to 1 bud picking style used to harvest the tea. After wet piling the tea was packed into baskets for longer term storage.

6.5 kilograms per basket

Very good

"I don’t have much experience with young liu bao. This one strikes me as above average production with very good longevity and complexity, but time is going to be the judge of that ultimately. At the moment, the dry leaves have a fairly strong fermentation aroma, which, after the rinse, turns into an earthy, woody and slightly sweet mix with a nice lichen note. The taste is more savoury and medicinal than other liu bao I’ve had. It does have the characteristic earthy and nutty notes, as well as the woody sweetness to a lesser extent, but they don’t dominate the experience. On top, there is also an interesting floral kind of bitterness a bit in the way of endive and mint. Hints of dry wood smoke and honey can be also found underneath. The liquor has a very smooth, creamy texture that has a palpable thickness to it and induces a faint numbing sensation. Aftertaste is dominated by woody sweetness that really comes to the fore over time."

Bright, vivid, earthy

"I only recently got into the world of tea, chose this one on a whim to try some darker teas and i'm still confused by how intricate this is. i'm having a hard time putting into words my experience. It has this incredibly vivid, bright aridness to it, like a warm breeze blowing through beach grass. it's definitely worth trying, definitely my favorite so far."

Pleasant woody taste

"Dry leaves: Mostly loose leaves, some of them compressed, but it is easy to separate. Earthy, dusty, medicinal smell. Dry leaves in hot gaiwan: Still smells earthy, but softer and more pleasant. Wet leaves and first infusions release woody notes. Taste is soft and balanced. There are no sharp or heavy notes. Aftertaste stays long. It’s quite a pleasant tea. It will stay on my shelf for a while, no need to hurry up with liu bao."
