Mutton Fat Jade Porcelain is a unique porcelain style from Dehua (Fujian) that is aesthetically pleasing but also has excellent heat retention and is completely non-porous.  The look of Mutton Fat Jade Porcelain 样脂玉 is startling and pleasing with a matte look.  It's not a glazing technique, the entire piece is the same material inside and out.  The matte finish is also hydrophobic so water quickly moves off the outside.

Mutton Fat Jade Porcelain is excellent for teas that benefit from excellent heat retention when brewing.  We have found it brews these teas the best:

  • Oolong Tea (Tie Guan Yin, Taiwan Oolongs, Dan Cong, Wu Yi Rock Oolongs)
  • Pu-erh Tea (Ripe and Raw)
  • Black Tea (if brewing Jin Jun Mei or other smaller leaf black teas use 85-90C water)
  • White Tea (all types)
  • Hei Cha (all types)

Comes in plush padded gift box (see pictures)

Love it!

"Exactly what I was hoping for. Best gaiwan I've ever had."

Matt C. (5/5)

"Solid build quality, the lid sits nicely between the saucer and bowl. Easy to clean the tea patina with warm water."

Exceeded my expectations

"This is even nicer than it looks in the photos. I’ve wanted a gaiwan in this type of ceramic for a very long time. The price for this is more than fair. I’ve seen similar for double the price. The matte white is absolutely beautiful and really brings out the color of the tea, and this is a joy tobrew in. Due to the texture of the ceramic, the lid doesn’t slide around like it would when brewing with the glossy, slick surface of some other styles of ceramic. I have been drinking tea for a very long time, and I’ve used many different types gaiwans in all materials, shapes, and sizes, and in my opinion, this gaiwan is relatively beginner friendly (though, you want your practice with a cheap one until you get at least a little comfortable, as it would be a crime to break this beautiful piece of art) Highly, highly recommend."

Worth it

"I have been looking for a matte porcelain gaiwan for some time now, but hesitated because of the price. Finally bought this one, and now that i've been using it for some time, i can say it was well worth the price. Everything about it feels high quality and carefully crafted. The porcelain is not too thin, but doesn't feel heavier than usual. I would have loved if the lips were a bit more turned outward though, but since this gaiwan has pretty big volume (155ml), if i'm doing a bit longer steeps, i just don't fill it up that much, and that way it doesn't burn my fingers when pouring. Overall, i'm very satisfied, and it has become my most cherished gaiwan."

Mutton Fat Jade Porcelain Gaiwan 155ml

"I bought the Mutton Fat Jade Porcelain Gaiwan 155ml a few weeks ago and it's been one of the best purchases I've ever made. The lid fits so well, that when I poured out the liquid, the wonderful tea- bought here also- came out extraordinarily well. It was a smooth and silky pour. I love using this Gaiwan when making my tea! It's now my new favorite!"

Mutton fat jade

"Nice one, matte white, 100ml when filling up the 3/4 (to not burn your fingers). Leaves are looking beautiful on matte white background."

Pure luxury

"Just a gorgeous piece of work. Smooth on the fingers, a joy to use. I want more of this jade!"

Great Gaiwan!

"I have used a basic gaiwan for many years and decided to treat myself to this Mutton Jade Gaiwan. Other than the slightly steep price, I have zero complaints! Here are some pros: great heat retention, texture feels luxuriously smooth and matte at the same time, rinses easily, perfect size, the lid balances between the saucer and the cup as one would desire it to (if you know, you know), and it has a beautiful pearl-like sheen to it. This Gaiwan is definitely impressive."

Q&A

Will this be restocked? If so, when?
Restocked!
I notice the lid is a little wobbly in the photos. Does this mean that the lid doesn't sit evenly on the bowl?
Photography fail... the lid sits pretty evenly.
Hello, do you also sell the matching pitcher? In other words a Total set?
