Big Yellow Mark (lit. Da Huang Yin) is a CNNP labelled tea from a small producer in Menghai.  The tea is a blend of Nan Nuo and Bu Lang Mountain Spring 2005 tea.  The tea has been stored in a "dry Guangdong" condition for 12 years and has developed a nice aged feel to it.  The bitterness and astringency of it's origin is still there but has largely (but not entirely) been transformed into something floral, sweet, and broth-like.  A lot of complexity and very thick viscous tea soup and long lasting full mouth-feeling.

I recommend this tea for those who like to drink semi-aged teas or want to take shortcut on the longer term aging by buying something semi-aged.  Another 10 years in a good pumidor or storage condition will transform this powerful tea into something that can be enjoyed as a truly aged tea!

** Some wrappers may be bug-bitten with little holes in the paper. There may also be some dust between the wrapper and the cake. Rinse tea once or twice briefly before drinking! If you are squeamish please don't order this tea!

Good Aged Sheng (updated)

"Hello! I've already reviewed this tea, but was very new to Eastern-style tea at the time. I'd like to offer a revised review that uses the experience I've gained (although I still have lots to learn). I brewed this sheng at 95C with 5g of leaf per 100mL of water (rinsed, then 15 second first infusion, adding 5 seconds for each subsequent infusion). This tea gives a thick, spicy texture with notes of tobacco, wood, mushroom, caramelized sugar, dried/stone fruits, and perhaps a hint of floral. It's just barely smoky. The astringency starts light and becomes light-moderate and is never unpleasant."

Good Aged Sheng!

"A solid, tasty sheng! My sample is 15 years aged at the time of this review. One of the main features of the tea is that it's got a mid to high level of astringency, but it's by no means overwhelming. This tea has a primarily green aroma, with floral and fruity notes as well. The taste is quite nice, with green/floral flavors taking the spotlight; however, some other flavors I've perceived have been light fruityness, toasted nuts, and a pleasant light smokiness. The aftertaste offers a well-rounded flavor profile of fresh and dried fruit, floral notes, light nuttiness, and after a few infusions a bready flavor. It's a wonderful tea, and I definitely recommend!"

Pretty good aged sheng

"Nice tobacco note, smooth but not the most complex"

Daily drinker

"This CNNP tastes like... well CNNP. It is strong, robust, has anything one would expect from aged raw pu-erh, not an inch less, but also not an inch more. There are no surprises with this one, neither good nor bad. This is a daily drinker, but even more daily drinky than your average daily drinker, The essence of daily drinkness. I think I will ever be 100% confident if CNNPs deserve their price tag or not...."

2005 yellow mark

"Good value. Still fairly astringent, will definitely benefit from further aging"

Smooth semi-aged sheng

"Very smooth, nice complexity as well. I think this will be a good choice for a semi-aged sheng with fruit and camphor taste."

nice middle age

"The cake laid some month in my storage room, since I tried it the last couple of days and like a lot! For me, the storage is not an issue, for I drink some more wetter cakes with great joy. But this tea already reached some aged state: the brew is getting darker, tones of wood and ripe fruits appear. What I like most is a kind of souerness that is never to strong, but gives a nice structure to the tea and has kind of freshness. The brew stays interesing for long time and you get many interesting infusions out of the leave. Good tea!"

Q&A

Hello Scott, I imagine some time has gone by since you wrote the original description. Is the storage history now 12 years Guangdong and 7 years Kunming? (it's late 2023 when I write this.)
That's correct.
